Restore an Ethernet Disk Gigabit to factory settings.

The Ethernet Disk Gigabit is a complete computer system. As with all modern computer systems, there are system updates, and the occasional need to restore the operating system to default settings.

Restoring the Ethernet Disk Gigabit is done using the restore CD. The requirements to do this without sending the unit in for service are:

A USB CD or DVD drive.
A display with a VGA connector.
A keyboard, and a mouse (either PS2 or USB.)
A blank CD ROM.

Begin the process by creating the restore CD on a computer with a CD burner. The restore disc image can be downloaded from the http://www.lacie.com website.

Choose the version appropriate with the hardware within the Ethernet disk that will be restored. To identify the Ethernet Disk version, look at the back of the drive.

If there are TWO USB ports, the disk is the "VIA PATA" version.

If there are FOUR USB ports, the disk is the "ECS PATA" version.

If there are FOUR USB PORTS AND NO EXPANSION CARD, the disk is the "ECS SATA" version.

Use burning software to create the disc.

On Macintosh, use Disk Utility to burn the image.

Open Disk Utility. This program can be found in the Utilities folder, which is inside the Applications folder.
From the "File" menu, choose "Open Disk Image" and select the ISO to be burned.
In the list of volumes on the left side, a new item representing the installer disk will show. Click on it.
Click the "Burn" button, and follow the instructions.

On Windows, use burning software. Roxio Easy Media Creator is suggested.

Once the disc is created, set up the Ethernet Disk to be restored/updated.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Following the procedure below will ERASE ALL DATA on the drive. Prior to following these directions, verify important data is stored securely on a different storage device.

Connect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and USB CD ROM drive to the Ethernet disk. Place the burned restore disc in the USB CDROM drive, then turn on the Ethernet disk. By default, it will attempt to boot from the restore disc.

There are two options on the latest restore disc.

Repair the operating system.
Restore the operating system.

Repair erases the Ethernet disk OS, and does not erase the data.

Restore erases everything on the Ethernet Disk, and sets everything to the default settings.

Click Verify to continue with the installation process. Several boxes will appear during this process, but there is no need to click anything. When finished, click the box that says "Shut Down". Remove the USB drive, and turn the Ethernet disk back on. The remainder of the process is automated, and after another reboot, the Ethernet disk will be ready for use.
